Debbie Cox Johnson, if you were in Mrs. Welch's class, then you remember a group of guys that got our butts beat on a regular basis. However, the first place prize went to Tommy Hutson....he got more than I did....boy he was mean!!!

Connie you were in that class, as I recall!!

The girls are trying to seem so innocent. Seems I remember trying to explain the letters "AA" in white shoe polish all over my car windows. Did that stand for the "Avenging Angels", rumors persisted, but know one ever fessed up. I sure hated riding that damned old school bus the next two weeks. JK

If it is him he saved my life on winter night at a dance at the Armery, or VFW, wherever we had the dances back when.
If its the same guy I'll tell u the story somketime.
And wasn't ur dad a lawyer?

Ok let's talk some more about Mrs. Welch. I, too, had the misfortune of being in her class and I hated every minute of it. No doubt I was one of the girls she paddled just because she could. I remember one recess when the boys were playing kick ball on the tennis court after a rain. Some had their shoes off and piled to the side. Roxanne and I decided to play kick the boot and a well placed lob landed the selected boot in a puddle. That boot belonged to a hellion well known to all. Namely, Tommy Hutson who wasted no time ratting us out. I don't recall that Roxanne was punished. She didn't have Mrs. Welch as a teacher. Welch the witch let Tommy take my shoe outside and he returned it filled to the brim with mud. The shoes were suede with patches on the side. Obviously the shoe was ruined and I was humiliated. I was one of the kids who asked to transfer to Mrs. Taylor's room when they brought her in to ease classroom over crowding. That was not much better and confirmed the adage that sometimes it's better to deal with the devil you know. Fifth grade really sucked! Wah wah wah. I wonder if Corny remembers an incident with Ms. Taylor. My mom actually stepped in on this one and I think Corny's mom did too. I liked most of my teachers thru school but those two did not make the list.

One question. Does anyone remember who nicknamed Mrs. Hoyler "lemon lips"? I'm thinking it was Mike Gleason. Do you remember?

These stories are like the "Days of My Life" or maybe Tulia "Shore or Sandbox" instead of Jersey Shore... keep them coming. Randy I was innocent, my brother Neal keep me in line!!.. at least until he graduated..

J. K. - If I remember right it was for Angelic Avengers. I'm just loving hearing all this stuff. Is anyone else thinking to themselves, "I guess I'm getting too old to remember what happened back then?" Yes, Ms. Welch was not a fun person to be around. After thinking about it she got me both times when I got swats.

Dallana Carlile (Loper)

This is all too funny and news to me! Never heard these stories! And hey, Randy, like Deb, I was innocent too, couldn't do much of anything since I lived 15 miles out in the country and didn't get to go anywhere especially since I didn't even get my driver's license til the week before I went to college! You guys were the wildest I believe!

Here's a girl's story late night Tulia about 1968 - anybody remember a "club" called the "PHSPA" I think? Debbie Love and I got 'initiated' into it by my sister Sandy and Debbie's sister Linda by having to run across the football field half dressed as our final initiation. I was scared to death, never ran so fast in my life to get back to the car and find Sandy and Linda rolling on the ground laughing at our stupidity - it was a hoax - not a club at/'tradition' designed to embarrass us and keep us from being so nosey and in their business. I mean it was quite the setup and we fell hook, line and sinker. I wanted in that club so BAD!! Just found an old scrapbook that had the papers all typed up describing the PHSPA organization, secret codes, etc. and when asked Sandy about it she's still laughing, but said it was an initiation she endured also from older girls, Shirley Tuttle, Cheryl? Anyone else get duped with this PHSPA thing or just me and Debbie? OMG!!!

The science teacher in question I believe was John Goen (sp). We had a couple of occasions to discuss his paddle technique. ( I lost ) He had a good swing, little too much upper cut, but very effective. Lifted you right off your heels.

Since Jo Carter is talking about initiations, Donna Bookout Henthorn, ask that really tall guy you married about some of that stuff....ask him if he remembers red bellys, and that really hot stuff we used for sore muscles. It wound up in some really interesting places...

Larry Wells...riding your Honda 250 back then gave me the itch to race dirt bikes later in life. I have two sitting in the garage right now. I still ride them. I even got Jordan on one...see the pictures on my profile.

As I read these tales and stories I realize that I really lived a sheltered life around you guys. I was only thrown in jail once. Larry you left me there took my car, your girlfriend and left me as a sitting duck for my dad. Judge Driskill was a good man with very firm words.

As for the science teacher, I think his name was Mr. Goen, big dude, strong swing, hard paddle.

Debbie Cox as I remember I received the end of the board from your dad more than once. It still did not make me any smarter in math, but it did make me very alert for flying erasers.

As for all of these stories, somebody with a lot of writing talent could write a book.

Well I guess I had better turn in, these 12 to 14 hour workdays are getting too me, especially 6 days a week. I took a new job in August that really looked great, until I found out that the State of Texas Health department frequently drops by.

I am beginning to feel like I slept through my whole time that I was in Tulia! There is a lot of this that I simply don't remember. Mike, tell ya the truth I don't even remember Mrs. Welch, I do believe I may have had other things pre-occuping me (guess I didn't do so good in english either)
AA did stand for Angelic Avengers, but I don't know that anything was ever avenged, I think it was mainly a bunch of Angels hanging out together.
Debbie, was it me and you that each told our moms that we were spending the night at each others house but didn't, and we were really glad they didn't check notes?
Or, was that my imagination.
I love this forum!

Ok, if we're gonna make a movie... we need some explosions! I'll never forget the day that while sitting on the window ledge in the boys restroom (possibly smoking a cigarette?), Tringle Butane Co. exploded! I don't know if it knocked me off the ledge or just scared the hell out of me... but it sure rattled those windows!
Surely someone else remembers that great big BOOM !!

Connie - Don't remember that. It was probably someone else. I was always too afraid of my parents to do that. Don't know where we would have gone anyway.
Yes Perry, daddy could swing a board, and a belt (but not too many times)

Celinda (Cindi) Ward (Hanna)

Lloyd: The only thing I remember about the explosion is that I wasn't in school that day and that event got me busted for ditching. I usually skipped once in awhile with some "underclassmen" (girls) and sometimes with an unnamed female classmate (she can tell her own tales so I won't implicate her here). We would drive out of town to Amarillo or Plainview so that we wouldn't be seen around Tulia when we were supposed to be in class. At the time I had a sister-in-law who just happened to have the same first (and of course last) names as my mother. She would call, identify herself (but never say she was my mom) and inform the school (usually Judene Montandon I believe) that I wouldn't be back from lunch. I seem to recall that we were in school until close to 4pm so I would make sure I was home at the appointed time to call my mom at work and report in. On the day you're talking about she asked me if the "explosion" scared me. Of course my first reaction and comment was "what explosion?". That pretty much did me in because there was no way I could have NOT heard it had I been in school. I got caught ditching at least twice that I remember but I don't think my mom ever told my dad and I never received any harsh punishment. My senior year I ditched a LOT but not as much as one of my partners in crime who was a junior! Also, my brother, Jack, would write my excuses and sign my dad's name under a threat of blackmail (ha ha). Little sisters can be wicked at times.

Jo: I never heard of the club you mentioned but am sure I would have fallen for the same BS. I do remember as a freshman that there were some senior girls who adopted some of us as "little sisters". My big sister was Johnny Keim's sister, Jackie. I still have a charm with her name on it that she gave me that year. The big sisters were supposed to help orient us to life in high school which was pretty scary and intimidating to the new "fish".

Debbie C: Your dad never paddled me but he did stand me in the corner more than once. I also remember that I was one of two girls in class that he referred to by a last name, just like the boys. All the other girls he called on by first name, but not me. I was "Ward" and even once he called me "little Ward". I know he taught at least one of my brothers and maybe even all 3 so that could explain it. I do remember calling on him as an adult when my teenage son wrecked a car while we were visiting Tulia from CA. Brian (son) told my nephew and friends that he could drive and the car ended up in a bar ditch. Brian got three citations as I recall. Your dad was Justice of the Peace or was in some official capacity as a judge and I called him about paying the fines after we returned to CA. He was really nice and dropped 2 of the charges and I paid one fine. I figured when I told him who I was he'd throw the book at me (ha).

Cindi - Dad was JP for a term & a half until he got sick. He was a good, understanding Judge, just like he was as a teacher.

Hey Cindi. I am wondering what incident with Mrs. Taylor you are talking about. As best I remember, I was pretty nieve and quiet and didn't get in much trouble cause I didn't want to face my mother if I got in trouble at school or anywhere else. Refresh my memory please.

I have been sitting here this morning reading all these posts and laughing my ass off. I can hardly wait til our reunion to see everybody and tell more stories. Randy Jordan, I have been your friend since the 5th grade also. Me, you Mike and others rode our bikes and played ball all over all the neighborhoods. We went to church together and sang in the choir together. I too believed that you would go somewhere with your voice and I am glad you did. I have always considered you my friend and don't you forget it. And for the rest of my classmates, we might not have been best friends, but I did and do consider nearly everyone my friend and can't wait to see you all. And for getting older. Well, my poor body is old but I refuse to grow up. I had both my knees replaced in Oct and Dec. and am getting around pretty good. And Jo, I wouldn't trade anything I've done even if it hurts to get up and down now. Hey, everybody have a good day. See you in July.
